The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State Branch, has urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the government’s economic policies and reduce the fuel price. The association’s chairman, Dr. Saheed Kehinde, condemned the recent fuel price increase, stating that it has imposed unbearable hardship on Nigerians, including medical professionals.
Kehinde noted that many medical professionals are leaving the country due to the deteriorating economic situation, and the fuel price hike will worsen their circumstances. He emphasized that the increase will deepen poverty, stress, and mortality rates, and urged the government to prioritize Nigerians’ welfare by reversing the price hike.
The NMA also advised the government to rethink its economic policies, focus on self-sufficiency in petroleum production, and revitalize local refineries. Additionally, they stressed the need to address insecurity to create a stable environment for economic growth.
The association’s statement reads: “The recent hike in PMS prices has worsened an already unsustainable economic reality for healthcare professionals and all Nigerians… We urge the government to expedite efforts to end petrol importation and focus on revitalising our local refineries.” They also called for immediate intervention to reduce the fuel price and provide relief to Nigerians.
