Opposition scheming to stop Oyebanji from breaking Ekiti two-term barrier

The political landscape in Ekiti State is heating up ahead of the 2026 governorship election. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is endorsing Governor Biodun Oyebanji for a second term, while the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are against the idea.

The APC claims that Oyebanji’s performance and personality have earned him the right to a second term, citing endorsements from various groups and leaders. However, the SDP and PDP argue that the governor has not fulfilled his election promises and that the endorsements are a distraction from his duties.

The SDP chairman, Dr. Dele Ekunola, stated that the endorsements are “deceitful” and will not guarantee Oyebanji’s re-election. He added that the SDP is “not sleeping” and is working to win the governorship in 2026.

The PDP chairman, Alaba Agboola, also expressed concerns about the endorsements, saying that they do not reflect the expectations of the Ekiti people. He stated that the PDP is hopeful of winning the next governorship election due to the perceived failures of the APC government.

The APC spokesperson, Segun Dipe, responded by saying that the opposition parties are displaying “hatred and contempt” for the ruling party. He insisted that Oyebanji is doing well and that the endorsements are a testament to his good work.

The battle for the Ekiti State governorship is shaping up to be a fierce contest between the APC and the opposition parties. While the APC is pushing for Oyebanji’s re-election, the SDP and PDP are determined to take over the government house in 2026.
