A retired Upper Sharia Court judge, Mahmud Shehu, appeared in a Zaria Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, facing charges of trespass and assault against a visually impaired housewife.

Prosecutor Insp. Adamu Abubakar outlined the case, stating that the charges violate sections 327, 237, and 239 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State 2017.

The incident reportedly occurred on September 6, when Garba Adda’u lodged a complaint at the Tudun Wada Divisional Police Headquarters, accusing Shehu of unlawfully entering his property, locking the door, and assaulting his visually impaired wife and her aides with an umbrella. The victim sustained injuries and required medical attention at the PHC Tudun Wada.

Shehu pleaded not guilty to the charges. His defense counsel, Mr. SM Abubakar, requested bail, which the prosecutor opposed, citing concerns for the complainant’s safety as they reside in the same neighborhood.

Senior Magistrate Lukman Sidi granted bail at N50,000 with one surety, who must possess an international passport and reside within the jurisdiction.

The court adjourned the hearing until October 8.
