The Kogi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended former Senator Dino Melaye from the party. The suspension was announced by the PDP executive committee in Ayetoro Gbede, Ward 1, following Melaye’s refusal to honor a summon.
The Ward executive committee cited anti-party activities and alleged misconduct as reasons for the suspension. The resolution, signed by Ward Chairman Abayomi Osamika and Secretary Ward Yodson Dayo, stated that Melaye’s conduct had brought embarrassment and disrepute to the party, making his continued membership untenable.
The suspension is in line with Article 59 (1) of the PDP constitution, which empowers Ward executive committees to take disciplinary actions against erring members. This development highlights the ongoing internal conflicts within the PDP, with Melaye’s suspension being the latest in a series of disciplinary actions taken against party members.
Melaye’s suspension may have implications for the party’s unity and cohesion, particularly in Kogi State. The PDP is already facing challenges, including the crisis in Rivers State, where Governor Sim Fubara is reportedly considering defection amid a feud with Nyesom Wike.
The party’s ability to manage internal conflicts and maintain unity will be crucial in the lead-up to future elections. The suspension of high-profile members like Melaye may further exacerbate these challenges, potentially impacting the party’s electoral prospects.
