Civil rights group Talakawas has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a credible, transparent, free, and fair governorship election in Edo State on September 21. The group also called on the police to provide security for voters and stakeholders.
Talakawas President Kola Edokpayi expressed concerns over the proliferation of arms in the state and urged security agencies to disarm those with illegal firearms. He cautioned “desperate politicians” against fanning discord and violence.
Edokpayi emphasized:
- INEC should ensure a transparent and fair election.
- Police should provide security for voters and stakeholders.
- Security agencies should disarm those with illegal firearms.
- Politicians should avoid violence and promote brotherly love.
The group urged eligible voters to cast their votes on September 21, stressing that power is transient and the election is not a declaration of war.
This call for a peaceful and fair election comes amid concerns over potential violence and manipulation in the Edo State governorship election.
