ASUU Condemns Alleged Victimisation of Members in Five Universities
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yola Zone, has strongly condemned the alleged victimisation of its members in five universities across Nigeria.
In a statement signed by Yola Zonal Coordinator, Dani Mamman, ASUU listed the affected universities as:
- Federal University of Technology, Owerri
- Lagos State University
- Ebonyi State University
- Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma
- Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyimba, and Chukwu Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam
ASUU alleged that members are facing:
- Physical assault
- Dismissal from service
- Denial of promotion
- Suspension from duty and statutory meetings
- Non-payment of promotion arrears
- Seizure of salaries
- No remittance of third-party deductions
The union stated that 120 lecturers were illegally dismissed for participating in union activities during the 2021 national strike. ASUU demanded:
- Immediate reinstatement of wrongfully dismissed union members
- Prompt payment of withheld salaries
- Intervention from the Federal Government, National Assembly, and relevant stakeholders to halt the alleged victimisation
ASUU emphasized that many lecturers are punished for asserting themselves and refusing to succumb to university management’s wrongdoing. The union stands in solidarity with victimized lecturers, reiterating that “an injury to one is an injury to all.”
