The Edo State Government has urged the international community to pressure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure a free and fair governorship election in the state. The government claims to have uncovered plans by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to disrupt the electoral process.
Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, alleged that APC leaders plan to:
- Arrest party members before and during the election
- Recruit 200 militants and fake police officers
- Disguise thugs in police uniforms
- Disrupt voting processes in units and wards
Nehikhare stated, “We call on President Tinubu to order security agencies to stop attacks on unarmed Edo people and Nigerians… We also appeal to the international community to pressure President Tinubu to ensure the electorate can vote freely.”
The government claims that despite previous appeals, security agencies have continued to arrest PDP chieftains and disrupt election materials.
