The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has vehemently rejected the new Anambra State Electoral Law, describing it as an attack on democracy. The law, passed by the Anambra State House of Assembly, allegedly violates the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022. IPAC has vowed to challenge the law in court, citing its inconsistencies with the constitution and electoral act.
The council’s National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, stated that the law is a “blatant assault on the rule of law and the electoral process” and an attempt to undermine democracy. IPAC argues that the law disregards the national leadership of political parties and instead empowers state chairmen, secretaries, and other officials.
Dantalle emphasized that Nigeria is governed by the rule of law and that any law inconsistent with the constitution and electoral act is void. He also highlighted IPAC’s advocacy for local government financial autonomy and the scrapping of State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs), which he believes impede democracy.
The council urged the Anambra State government to set aside the law to avoid litigation and maintain peace in the country. IPAC emphasized that power resides with the people and cannot be captured through legislative fiat. The council is committed to nurturing democracy and ensuring its maturity to yield benefits for citizens.
