Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed his dismay at the deplorable state of Nigerian roads. In a recent post, Obi shared his experience of traveling from Onitsha to Igarra, Akoko-Edo, and then to Ekpoma and Benin, all in Edo State, which took significantly longer than usual due to poor road conditions.
Obi lamented that the journey from Ekpoma to Benin, which normally takes about two hours, now takes around three hours. He also encountered over a dozen accidents along the way, leaving him heartbroken and wondering how the country had allowed itself to deteriorate to this point.
Obi’s comments highlight the need for urgent attention to Nigeria’s road infrastructure. The country’s roads have been in a state of disrepair for years, causing accidents, delays, and economic losses. The former presidential candidate’s experience is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by Nigerians daily.
Obi’s statement also underscores the need for effective leadership and governance. He questioned how leaders could be so indifferent to the plight of their citizens, allowing the country to descend into such a state.
The issue of poor road conditions is not limited to Edo State; it is a nationwide problem. Obi’s experience serves as a call to action for the government to prioritize road maintenance and construction to ensure safer and more efficient travel for all Nigerians.
