Nigeria to Cut Transport Fares by 40% with Compressed Natural Gas Expansion

The Nigerian government has unveiled plans to reduce transportation fares by over 40% through expanded compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure.
The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative’s Programme Director, Michael Oluwagbemi, stated that the government aims to provide affordable transportation amidst rising fuel prices.

- Fares for 8-passenger vehicles to drop from N12,000 to N7,000
- Fares for 4-passenger vehicles to drop from N13,000 to N8,000 (Abuja to Ajaokuta train station)
- Conversion of existing commercial vehicles to CNG, sold at up to 60% discount compared to petrol prices
- 10 CNG fuel conversion centers established between Abuja, Itakpe, and Ajaokuta
- Additional stations planned in partnership with Bovas and Greenville
The National Union of Road Transport Workers has committed to ensuring compliance with the new fare structure, with implementation expected nationwide by October.
