Tragedy struck at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Wildlife Park in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when a lion attacked and killed its 35-year-old handler, Babaji Daule. The incident occurred on Saturday when Daule was feeding the lion in its inner enclosure after the park’s closing time. Unfortunately, he neglected to secure the locks and barricade of the lion’s enclosure, allowing the animal to escape and attack him ¹ ².
According to the park’s management, Daule was a trained handler who had agreed to take some guests to demonstrate the feeding routine. However, he apparently felt comfortable with the animal and left the safety protection gate open, leading to the tragic outcome. To prevent further mutilation of the body, the lion was put down immediately by park personnel ¹.
The police confirmed the incident, stating that Daule’s negligence led to the lion’s escape and attack, resulting in fatal injuries to his neck. The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary in Ijaye General Hospital, Abeokuta ¹.
This heartbreaking incident raises concerns about the safety measures in place to protect staff and visitors at wildlife parks. The management has reassured the public that it is dedicated to providing the highest level of safety and protection ¹.
