The Labour Party (LP) in Anambra State has announced its rejection of the proposed local government election scheduled for September 28. The party’s state working committee expressed shock and concern over the hasty amendment of the state electoral laws by the House of Assembly, allegedly prompted by Governor Prof Chukwuma Soludo.
The LP highlighted two key issues: the lack of budgetary provisions for the proposed council election and the hurried nature of the amendments, which extended into the late hours of the night. The party believes the governor is under pressure to conduct the election before October 2024 to avoid losing monthly local government fund allocations, as ruled by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
After carefully reviewing the amended Electoral Law, the LP has decided to challenge it in court. The party will participate in the election only if the lawful processes are followed, pending the outcome of the judicial proceedings. This development adds a new layer of complexity to the already contentious political landscape in Anambra State.
