Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara will swear in 23 newly elected Local Government Council chairmen today, October 6, 2024, at 4 pm. The Action Peoples Party (APP) won all 23 chairmanship seats in Saturday’s election.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) confirmed the election’s conclusion. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt.
Despite pre-election concerns and incidents of violence, voter turnout was substantial. The exercise began early, albeit without police presence due to a court order. A Federal High Court in Abuja had restrained security agencies from providing security.
RSIEC received a copy of the voter register from INEC last year, enabling the election to proceed. However, Minister of Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike’s supporters protested against the election.
