A fire outbreak occurred at the Mgbuka Obosi Old Motor Spare Parts Market in Anambra State, gutting several shops. The incident happened on Saturday night, primarily affecting three shops, including a provision store. The cause of the fire was attributed to a power surge resulting from a poor electrical connection in one of the burnt structures.
The market chairman, Samuel Ifurunwa, stated that the security operatives quickly responded to the incident, but the fire had already spread due to fuel inside one of the shops. The owner of the shop where the connection was made, Sunday Ezekwe, claimed he was not present at the time of the incident and had not stored fuel in his shop.
The President General of the Anambra State Markets Amalgamated Traders Association, Humphrey Anuna, lamented that most fire incidents in markets are caused by illegal connections. He advised against structures being placed under high-tension cables.
The Anambra State Fire Service confirmed the incident, stating that firefighters contained the fire after several hours, saving many stores and shops in the market. No lives were lost, and the cause of the fire was attributed to a power surge. The public is advised to be safety conscious to prevent such incidents.
