The training, themed “Capacity Building for Effective Municipal Solid Waste Management,” equipped environmental officers with tools to assess waste generation, identify stakeholders, and develop data-driven waste management strategies. The ultimate goal is to build wealth from waste and attract investors to the waste management sector.

Ekiti State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, emphasized the importance of effective waste management in attracting investors and promoting development. The state has already registered Ado Ekiti in the African Clean Cities Platform, which will result in a cleaner and healthier environment.

The training is part of the Ekiti State Sustainable Urban Development Programme designed by UN-Habitat. The program aims to address waste management issues in Ado Ekiti and throughout Ekiti State. With accurate data, the state can attract investors and enhance its waste management efforts.

The Ekiti State Waste Management Agency has revived its recycling plant at Ilokun Dumpsite and plans to expand operations once sufficient data is available. The agency aims to create jobs and effectively utilize materials at the dumpsite. The state government has also provided 20 Dino bins for waste collection and plans to produce additional bins to ensure efficient waste collection across the state.
