Super Eagles Captain Condemns Libyan Authorities Over “Disgraceful” Airport Ordeal
Tripoli, Libya – October 14, 2024
Nigerian national football team captain, William Troost-Ekong, has denounced the treatment of his team by Libyan authorities after they were stranded for over 12 hours at Al Abaq Airport.
The team, originally scheduled to land in Benghazi for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, was redirected to Al Abaq without explanation. Troost-Ekong described the situation as “disgraceful” and accused Libyan authorities of playing “mind games.”
The team was kept in an abandoned airport without food, drink, or phone connections. Troost-Ekong revealed that the Tunisian pilot, who managed the unexpected change in destination, was refused accommodation for his crew under government orders.
The Nigerian Football Federation has confirmed that players and officials were held hostage by Libyan authorities upon arrival. The team has decided not to proceed with the scheduled match, citing safety concerns.
The Confederation of African Football has yet to respond to the unfolding situation.
