Shell Accused of Diverting $1 Billion Insurance Claim for Bonga Oil Spill Victims
Lagos, Nigeria – October 16, 2024
The Oil Spill Victims Vanguard (OSPIVV) has accused Shell Trading and Shipping Company Limited and its partners of diverting a $1 billion insurance indemnity claim intended for victims of the 2011 Bonga Oil Spill.
The allegations, contained in a suit filed in April 2022, claim Shell and Britannia Steamship Insurance Association Limited concealed the compensation from Nigerian regulatory authorities and impacted victims.
The 2011 spill, one of Nigeria’s worst environmental disasters, occurred during crude oil loading by Shell’s vessel MT Nothia, causing widespread pollution in Niger Delta communities.
OSPIVV seeks to recover the diverted funds, holding international oil companies accountable for their actions in Nigeria’s oil-rich region.
