Former Minister and PDP chieftain, Osita Chidoka, has emphasized the need for diligence and morality in ensuring the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process. He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to review election results within the stipulated seven-day period to prevent any manipulation.
Chidoka suggested that INEC should scan all paper ballots and appoint election auditors to verify the results. He also advocated for the establishment of Election Offences Tribunals, as recommended in the Justice Uwais report, to hold individuals accountable for electoral malpractices.
Chidoka’s comments come amid concerns about the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process. He stressed the importance of ensuring that no individual or group takes advantage of any loopholes in the system. By reviewing results and verifying their accuracy, INEC can guarantee the integrity of the electoral process.
The call for Election Offences Tribunals is a significant aspect of Chidoka’s proposal. Such tribunals would provide a platform for investigating and prosecuting electoral malpractices, thereby deterring individuals from engaging in such activities.
Chidoka’s recommendations are timely and relevant, given the ongoing debates about Nigeria’s electoral process. His emphasis on diligence, morality, and accountability highlights the need for a transparent and trustworthy system. By implementing these measures, Nigeria can strengthen its democracy and ensure that the voices of its citizens are truly represented.
