Former President Olusegun Obasanjo Declares Loyalty to Nigeria Over Oodua Republic
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria’s unity, stating he would choose the country over the proposed Oodua Republic. Obasanjo, a Yoruba man, made this declaration during a visit from the League of Northern Democrats at his Abeokuta residence.
Obasanjo attributed Nigeria’s disunity to regionalism practiced before independence. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing national interests, saying, “Where I was born should not be the enemy of my being a Nigerian… It will be greater to be a Nigerian than to be a member of the Republic of Oodua.”
This statement comes amid Sunday Adeyemo’s (Igboho) petition to the UK government for recognition of the Yoruba Nation. Obasanjo’s stance underscores his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and national interests.
