Petrol Tanker Catches Fire on Sagamu-Benin Expressway
A petrol-laden tanker burst into flames yesterday along the FIDSCO area of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway in Ogun State. The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency Commandant, Seni Ogunyemi, confirmed the incident, stating that the tanker fell into a ditch before catching fire [1).
Despite warnings from authorities, several residents attempted to scoop fuel from the spillage, posing a significant risk to their safety. A video of the accident scene showed some residents scooping the fuel.
The police and fire service were contacted immediately, and efforts are ongoing to transload the product. Firefighters are working to put out the fire, but there is no official word on casualties yet.
This incident is a concerning reminder of the dangers of fuel tanker accidents, which have resulted in significant loss of life and property in the past. In a similar incident, 18 people were killed in a fire after a fuel-laden bus exploded on the same expressway ¹.
