Enugu Govt demolishes kidnappers’ dens, says more to go

The Enugu State Government has demolished properties used by kidnappers to detain their victims in the outskirts of Enugu, the state capital. The properties, including an uncompleted storey-building with an underground tunnel and a large farm housing a poultry, piggery, and plantain plantation, were destroyed in compliance with Section 315 of the Criminal Code (Second Amendment) Law Cap. 30, Laws of Enugu State.

The demolition exercise, carried out by the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), followed months of discreet investigation by security operatives, who recovered arms and ammunition, including 17 firearms, shrines, charms, and mini Indian hemp farms.

Chairman of ECTDA, Uche Anya, stated that the demolitions were in line with the government’s determination to eradicate crime and criminality in the state. He warned property owners not to allow their properties to be used for kidnapping or other criminal activities, emphasizing that the government would take over such properties and put them to good use.

Anya noted that the demolition is an ongoing process, with more structures already marked for destruction. He emphasized that Enugu State has an anti-kidnapping law and that the government would not condone any activity that deprives individuals of their liberty and leads to death.

The Enugu State Government’s actions demonstrate its commitment to combating kidnapping and other criminal activities in the state. By demolishing properties used for kidnapping and taking over such properties, the government aims to send a strong signal to criminals and protect the lives and liberties of citizens.
