Niger varsity student drowns in fishpond during hiking trip

A student of the Federal University of Technology Minna, Niger State, Oluwaseyi Adebayo, has died after falling into a fishpond while hiking with his colleagues. The 400-level student of the Department of Animal Production slipped from a hilltop and landed in the fish pond on August 10. Locals refused to release the corpse until rituals were performed to prevent a similar occurrence from happening to his colleagues. The university authorities initially refused to comply but eventually, concerned individuals paid the required amount and provided a white ram for the sacrifice.

The Student Union Government confirmed the incident and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. They also warned students to avoid outdoor events near waterways and swimming in water bodies of undefined depth. The university’s spokesperson denied knowledge of the incident, while the Niger State Police Command said the matter was not reported to them.
