On Sunday, a tragic accident involving an Abia Line Network Sienna vehicle occurred near the Umuika Junction along the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt expressway, resulting in the deaths of several passengers, including two infants. The crash, which took place around 12:45 pm, happened while the Sienna was traveling from Abakaliki in Ebonyi State to Aba in Abia State.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle after falling asleep at the wheel, leading to a collision with a truck before veering off the road into a bush. Miraculously, the driver survived the crash, but all his passengers tragically perished.
The Abia Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have confirmed the incident. ASP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, stated that an investigation is underway following the accident scene’s examination. Meanwhile, the Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mrs. Ngozi Ezeoma, clarified in a press statement that five individuals, not eleven as initially reported, died as a result of the collision.
The FRSC’s report detailed that the crash involved a Toyota Previa traveling to Enugu, which collided with a stationary Mack truck. Among the eleven people involved, four died at the scene, consisting of two male adults and two male children, while three others sustained injuries. A rescue team arrived promptly, and the injured were transported to Ronald Hospital, Umuikaa. The deceased were taken to Mighty Moon Mortuary near Umuikaa Junction.
Further updates revealed that, following a follow-up on Monday, one male adult died in the hospital, raising the death toll to five: three male adults and two male children. Two individuals remain hospitalized—one male in critical condition at the Federal Medical Center, Umuahia, and one female at Ronald Hospital. Fortunately, three adults and one child survived without injuries, with the surviving child now in the custody of the Umuikaa Police Station.
