The Nigerian Presidency has unveiled a new Airbus A330 jet for President Bola Tinubu, replacing the 19-year-old Boeing B737-700(BBJ) purchased during Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration. The new jet was revealed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, via his X handle.
According to Onanuga, the new jet saves Nigeria millions of dollars in maintenance and fuel costs annually. The decision to replace the old jet followed a parliamentary investigation into its safety record and cost efficiency, particularly after a malfunction during a trip to Saudi Arabia.
The Nigerian Senate’s security and intelligence committee recommended replacing the aging aircraft to reduce downtime and operational expenses. The new plane features state-of-the-art avionics, a customized interior, and communication system.
President Tinubu departed Abuja for Paris, France, on Monday, August 19, using the new Airbus A330. The trip marks his fourth visit to France since assuming office. The amount spent on acquiring the new jet was not disclosed.
The unveiling of the new presidential jet comes amid ongoing protests and criticism of the government’s handling of the country’s economic and security challenges.
