Anambra threatens to demolish buildings without approval

The Anambra State Government has threatened to demolish buildings constructed without approval, citing the rising incidents of building collapses due to poor construction practices. The Chairman of the Anambra State Physical Planning Board, Chike Maduekwe, announced this during an inspection tour in Idemili North Local Government Area.

Maduekwe warned developers and builders to obtain necessary permits or face demolition and legal action. He noted that over 20 buildings have collapsed in the state in the past seven months, resulting in 25 deaths and numerous injuries.

The government has launched “Operation show your building permit” to sanitize the building sector. Developers have been given a grace period until October 31 to present their permits. Failure to comply will result in demolition and legal action.

Maduekwe emphasized that the government will no longer tolerate impunity in the building sector and urged developers to operate according to the law. He also warned individuals falsely claiming to be members of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria to desist from extorting money from owners of illegal structures.

The government’s efforts aim to curb building collapses and ensure public safety. Developers are urged to comply with regulations to avoid demolition and legal consequences.
