Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has condemned the recurring harassment of journalists in Nigeria by government authorities. He stated that Nigeria risks becoming a “Banana Republic” where journalists are silenced or disappear for doing their job.
Obi was reacting to the recent disappearance and detention of whistleblower PIDOM Nigeria, who was arrested for allegedly leaking classified documents and other cyber-related offenses. He described the harassment, abduction, detention, and other measures against investigative journalists as “disturbing and unacceptable.”
Obi emphasized the importance of press freedom and the role of journalists in holding those in power accountable. He called for the Freedom of Information Bill to be passed and for citizens to have access to unclassified information. He also demanded justice, accountability, and an end to attacks on press freedom.
Pro-democracy activist Omoyele Sowore also condemned the action, calling for PIDOM’s immediate release. He warned that PIDOM could be harmed if not released immediately.
This incident is part of a larger trend of government suppression of information and harassment of journalists in Nigeria. The authorities must be held accountable for their actions, and press freedom must be protected to ensure a democratic society.
