The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, may clash at the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting on Wednesday, September 4. Wike threatened to instigate crisis in any state whose governor interferes with the politics of Rivers state, sparking a fresh battle.
The PDP Governors Forum, led by Bala Mohammed, had called for a review of the party congress results to restore Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s leadership. Wike’s threat was seen as a response to this move, and party leaders have warned that no single individual can terminate the life of the party.
The NWC meeting is expected to discuss the PDP’s recently-held ward and state congresses, as well as the governors’ position on the Rivers crisis. A senior NWC member revealed that the party leaders would review and discuss the issues, and the governors would convey their stance on Rivers State and their preferred approach.
Wike’s rift with his political godson and successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has deepened, with Wike ruling out reconciliation. The minister explained that he was more concerned about ensuring Fubara delivers for President Tinubu.
The crisis in the PDP has raised questions about the party’s unity and ability to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections. The NWC meeting is expected to address these issues and find a way forward for the party.
