The Labour Party (LP) has appointed Senator Esther Nenadi Usman as the chairman of its caretaker committee. The announcement was made during a stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, Abia State, on Wednesday. Usman, a former minister of finance, will lead a 29-member committee tasked with restructuring the party and addressing its ongoing leadership issues.
The committee’s secretary is Senator Darlington Nwokocha, who represented Abia Central in the Senate. The caretaker committee has 90 days to complete its assignment, which includes organizing a convention to elect new leadership for the party.
The meeting was attended by prominent LP members, including Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State. The appointment of Usman and Nwokocha is seen as a step towards resolving the party’s leadership crisis and preparing for the 2027 elections.
Usman’s experience as a former minister of finance and senator makes her a strong candidate to lead the party’s caretaker committee. Her appointment is expected to bring stability and direction to the party as it navigates its current challenges.
The LP is also reportedly considering a merger with other opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), to strengthen its chances in the 2027 elections. However, this has not been officially confirmed by the party.
