Army arrests suspected killer of FUNAAB student kidnapped in Lagos

The Nigerian Army has arrested Adeleye Ayomide, the suspect responsible for the death of Idowu Christiana, a 300-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State. Christiana was abducted along the Ikorodu-Yaba Road, Lagos State, on August 19, 2024, and her abductors demanded a ransom of N3 million, later reduced to N350,000, which was paid but she was not released.

The Army’s spokesperson, Lt-Col. Olabisi Ayeni, confirmed Ayomide’s arrest, stating that he was arrested by men of the 174 Battalion and would be handed over to the Lagos State Police Command. The Student Union Government president of FUNAAB, Ibrahim Adeyemi, also confirmed Christiana’s death.

The case has sparked outrage on social media, with many demanding justice for Christiana. The hashtag #JusticeForChristiana is trending on X (formerly Twitter) with over 90,000 posts. Users have shared details of the case, including Ayomide’s alleged confession to the crime.

Ayomide, a student of Philosophy at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, was reportedly arrested at his parents’ house in Ikorodu, Lagos State, after his cell phone activities and text messages were tracked by operatives. Damning evidence, including the victim’s phone, was found with him.

The case has highlighted the issue of kidnapping and ransom demands in Nigeria, with many calling for urgent action to address the problem. The Nigerian Army’s swift action in arresting the suspect has been commended, and there are hopes that justice will be served for Christiana and her family.
