Tragedy struck in Lagos on Sunday as three people lost their lives in multiple accidents along the Maryland axis. The accidents, which occurred in the early hours, involved a diesel-laden tanker, a containerized truck, and several other vehicles.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the first accident happened when the tanker experienced brake failure and rammed into several vehicles, resulting in three fatalities and an unspecified number of injuries.
Upon arrival, the LASEMA team discovered another crash involving a containerized truck that had collided with a MACK truck, leaving the container truck driver with a leg injury.
The accidents were attributed to reckless driving, speeding, and mechanical failure. Emergency responders, including LASEMA, the police, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, worked together to secure the area, implement traffic control measures, and recover the vehicles involved.
The vehicles involved included two Volkswagen Vanagon commercial buses, one Mitsubishi Space Bus, two mini-buses (Korope), and one Honda car. The road and bridge were temporarily closed to facilitate recovery efforts and alleviate traffic gridlock.
LASEMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Nosa Okunbor, confirmed the incidents and commended the emergency responders for their swift response and tireless efforts in managing the situation. The agency also warned drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such incidents.
