Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has accused the police of colluding with the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) to intimidate and arrest members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the governorship election. Obaseki claimed that the police are planning to arrest many PDP stalwarts, which he described as a dangerous trend that threatens democracy.
He specifically mentioned the arrest of the Esan West local government chairman, who was whisked away to Abuja, undermining his authority as the Chief Security Officer of the State. Obaseki appealed to PDP supporters to remain calm and peaceful, stating that he would express his concerns to the Inspector General of Police during his visit to the state.
The governor’s allegations come amidst a charged political atmosphere in Edo State, with less than two weeks to the governorship election. The accusations of police bias and intimidation have raised concerns about the fairness and credibility of the electoral process.
