Tragic Incident: Suspected Vandal Electrocuted in Yobe

A suspected vandal met his demise while attempting to steal from a transformer substation in Damaturu, Yobe State. The incident occurred when the individual tried to tamper with an exposed live wire, resulting in instant electrocution.

According to Blessing Tunoh, Communications Officer at Yola Electricity Distribution Company, the suspect’s body was evacuated by the police and taken to the Damaturu Teaching Hospital. Relatives identified and claimed the corpse.

Investigations revealed that the deceased attempted to shield himself with his shirt while tampering with the live wire, but unfortunately, contact with the cable led to his electrocution. The transformer remained undamaged.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Yobe Command, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, stated that the incident occurred during a power outage, and the suspect’s lifeless body was discovered by residents on their way to morning prayers.

The police have pledged to support the YEDC in protecting their installations and prosecuting arrested vandals who damage power infrastructure and disrupt services.

This tragic incident highlights the dangers of vandalism and the importance of respecting electrical installations to avoid such fatalities.
