Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has criticized the President Bola Tinubu-led administration for its wasteful spending, which he believes has worsened the living conditions of Nigerians. Obi stated that Nigeria is in a crisis with 38 million people on the verge of extreme hunger, and the government’s spending on non-essential projects is unacceptable.
He listed examples of wasteful spending, including the purchase of a new presidential jet for $100 million, N21 billion for the renovation of the vice president’s lodge, and N15 billion for the construction of the National Assembly clinic. Obi argued that the government should prioritize spending on key development areas such as health, education, poverty alleviation, and security.
Obi emphasized that the government cannot ask people to “fast” while they are “feasting.” He suggested that the Federal Government should use its resources to address human insecurity and food insecurity, and invest in agriculture to solve hunger, unemployment, and inflation.
Additionally, Obi hinted at the possibility of a merger with other opposition parties to salvage Nigerians from hunger and widespread insecurity ahead of the 2027 presidential election. He emphasized the need for collective action to address the country’s challenges and ensure a better future for Nigerians.
