UK PM Starmer, Italy’s Meloni meet over illegal immigration

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni in Rome to discuss tackling illegal immigration. The meeting comes after another Channel migrant shipwreck claimed eight lives, bringing the total number of deaths this year to 46.

Starmer has vowed to fight illegal immigration, a contentious issue in British politics. He has rejected the previous government’s plan to expel illegal migrants to Rwanda and is instead interested in Italy’s strategy. Italy has signed agreements with Albania and Tunisia to open centers for migrants and provide aid in exchange for greater efforts to stop Italy-bound migrants.

The UK and Italy aim to improve joint operations and discuss ways to address the migration crisis. Starmer is accompanied by the chief of the UK’s new Border Security Command, Martin Hewitt.
