UPDATED: PDP rejects Edo election result, heads to court

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally rejected the results of the Edo State Governorship election, citing irregularities and manipulation by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and government-controlled agencies. Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum called on Nigerians to support the PDP’s rejection, stating that the election didn’t meet democratic standards.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Senator Monday Okpebholo of the APC won with 291,667 votes, followed by Asue Ighodalo of the PDP with 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party with 22,763 votes. However, Damagum claimed that Ighodalo was the legitimate winner.

The PDP demands a review of the election results and plans to challenge the outcome in court. They alleged that the APC compromised security operatives and INEC officials to manipulate the ballot process and substitute genuine results with fictitious figures.

Damagum urged the people of Edo to remain strong and steadfast, emphasizing that only their will, as expressed at the polling units, should be respected. He also expressed concerns about the judiciary’s preparedness to deliver justice, stating that the case will test the system’s integrity.

The Edo State Governorship election has been marred by controversy, with the PDP accusing the APC of rigging and compromising democratic processes. The outcome of the court challenge will be crucial in determining the legitimacy of the election results.
