Call for Probe into Misuse of Ecological Funds in Nigeria

Nigeria’s ecological challenges, such as soil erosion, flooding, drought, and desertification, have been exacerbated by corruption and mismanagement of funds allocated to address these issues. The Federation Account Act of 1981 established the Ecological Fund to tackle environmental problems.

Despite increased allocations over the years, including 3% of the Federation Account, the funds have been largely misused or embezzled. Reports indicate that billions of naira have been withdrawn for non-ecological purposes, such as loans to individuals and agencies, or spent on questionable projects.

The Ecological Fund Office’s website lists numerous ongoing projects, but many small-scale initiatives remain incomplete after years. This raises concerns about transparency and accountability.

Climate change poses existential threats to Nigeria, with desertification and flooding causing insecurity, conflict, and food scarcity. Nigerians must demand that ecological funds are utilized effectively to address environmental issues.

Between June 2023 and May 2024, states received N39.62 billion from the Ecological Fund. Citizens and lawmakers must ensure the Executive arm accounts for how these funds were deployed.
