A tragic incident occurred in Lagos today, September 29, 2024, when an Acura SUV collided with a herd of cattle crossing the highway at Iyana-Oworo, inward Ogudu, resulting in the death of two cows and significant damage to the vehicle ¹. According to Adebayo Taofiq, spokesman for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident happened when the cows were crossing the road.
In another unrelated incident, five people were injured in a motor accident involving a commercial Mazda bus and a mini-bus on the Ifako Bridge en route to Ogudu ¹. Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the Mazda bus was distracted by eating while driving, lost control, and experienced sudden brake failure, leading to the collision.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed sympathy to the victims and urged motorists, especially commercial bus operators, to prioritize road safety and remain vigilant ¹.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time such an incident has occurred. In Delta State, three people were feared dead after a car rammed into cows on the highway ². The repeated occurrence of these incidents highlights the need for stricter regulations on cattle grazing and driver education to prevent such accidents.
