The government cited the economic situation as the reason for the subdued celebration. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, acknowledged Nigerians’ struggles.

Protest organizers demand solutions to the high cost of living and other issues. They cite rising prices for essential items like beans, rice, and eggs.

The National Bureau of Statistics reported significant price increases: beans (271.55% year-on-year), rice (148.41%), and eggs (121.92%). A 50kg bag of rice now costs around N100,000.

The protest, tagged FearlessInOctober, follows August’s hunger protests. Organizers claim President Bola Tinubu ignored their demands.

Security agencies warned protesters against disrupting law and order, but organizers insist on peaceful demonstrations. Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore emphasized security agencies’ duty to protect protesters.
