The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s 64th Independence Day speech, calling it “lethargic and windy rhetoric” filled with false performance claims and empty promises.

PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba described the speech as a “complete waste of time” that failed to address pressing economic and security issues. The party accused President Tinubu of being insensitive to Nigerians’ struggles, citing widespread economic hardship, unemployment, and extreme poverty.

In response, President Tinubu emphasized the need for reform to ensure Nigeria’s progress and prosperity. He warned against continuing with business as usual, which could lead to national collapse. The President highlighted his administration’s achievements, including attracting over $30 billion in foreign direct investment.

The PDP disputed these claims, arguing that they contradicted the reality of rising fuel prices and unemployment. The party urged President Tinubu to engage directly with citizens, rather than relying on fabricated statistics.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) defended the President’s speech, attributing the PDP’s criticism to frustration over the ruling party’s achievements. APC Director of Publicity Bala Ibrahim stated that the PDP’s reaction was an “afterthought,” as they saw what they failed to achieve being accomplished by the APC government.

The exchange reflects deep divisions between the two parties, with the PDP calling for more genuine engagement with the public and the APC touting its accomplishments.
