ASUU Urges Nigerians to Blame FG for Potential Strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) warned Nigerians to hold the Federal Government responsible if its members embark on another strike. ASUU-Nsukka Zone’s Zonal Coordinator, Raphael Amokaha, stated that the union has exhausted efforts to avert the looming strike.
Amokaha cited unresolved issues from the 2022 strike, including:
- Renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU/FGN Agreement
- Poor university funding
- Integrated Personnel Payment Information System (IPPIS) breaches
- Unpaid Earned Academic Allowances (EAA)
- Unaddressed emoluments and entitlements
Despite efforts to avoid industrial action, Amokaha claimed the government has shown insincerity and nonchalance. “ASUU has bent backwards to seek an amicable resolution, but government agents have been lackadaisical and evasive.”
The union emphasized that university workers have not had a salary review in 15 years. Amokaha questioned the government’s priorities, citing the planned youth confab as inadequate compared to securing quality education.
“The way forward is for government to take education seriously… Let good conscience prevail,” Amokaha urged.
ASUU-Nsukka Zone warned that if the government frustrates the union into another strike, it should be held solely responsible. The union remains resilient, appealing for public support to pressure the government to address its concerns.
