Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has made a commitment to clear the outstanding salary arrears of teachers in the state by December 2024. This promise was made during a town hall meeting with principals and head teachers of public schools in Jalingo, the state capital, on Monday.
The governor also pledged to promote deserving teachers, directing the state Ministry of Education to set up a committee to assess the issue of promotions and make recommendations. Kefas emphasized the importance of free and compulsory education in building the future generation, stating that his administration is working to ensure young people receive the best education and teachers are well-supported.
Some key highlights of Governor Kefas’ commitments include:
- Clearing Salary Arrears: Payment of four months’ salary arrears owed to primary school teachers across the state.
- Teacher Promotions: Promotion of deserving teachers to boost morale.
- Education Materials: Distribution of over 100,000 school uniforms, bags, sandals, and other items to children.
- School Security: Collaboration with the Civil Defense to enhance physical security in school environments.
The State Commissioner for Education, Augustina Godwin, noted that the state has moved from being educationally disadvantaged to competing educationally, thanks to the governor’s efforts. Enrollment in schools has significantly increased due to the free and compulsory education policy ¹.
