Labour Party chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has urged politicians to stand up for their people or step aside. Okonkwo, a former LP campaign spokesperson, made this statement while discussing the recent Rivers State Local Government Area elections.
Okonkwo praised Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for ensuring the elections took place despite opposition and praised his resolve to fight for the people’s rights. Fubara had faced challenges, including the pull-out of the Nigeria Police Force and pushback from supporters of Minister Nyesom Wike.
Okonkwo emphasized that politicians like Fubara, who resist and protest when their rights are trampled, are essential for solidifying Nigeria’s democracy. He stated, “If you’re not willing to take the risk attached to any profession, step aside so that people who God gives that mind will go ahead and serve.”
Okonkwo commended Fubara’s courage, saying, “He’s ready for them. He’s fully prepared. The election must go on. Winners must be declared. They will be sworn in, and whatever is going to happen, let it happen.”
