Customs declare war on smugglers, target fuel smuggling across borders

Nigeria’s Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has declared war on smugglers, labeling them “enemies of Nigeria’s development.” This stance was conveyed through Deputy Comptroller-General Olaniyi Olajogun during an update on Operation Whirlwind.

Operation Whirlwind, launched in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser, aims to curb illegal petroleum product smuggling across Nigeria’s borders. Recent successes include:

  • Seizure of 94,550 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) valued at ₦75.45 million
  • Confiscation of two trucks and 1,046 jerricans
  • Arrest of one suspect

Customs officers are working with security agencies to combat smuggling, strengthening Nigeria’s economy and reducing poverty.
