EFCC Clarifies Alleged Invasion of Enugu Radio Station
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released a statement addressing the alleged invasion of Urban Radio 94.5FM in Enugu on October 14. According to Dele Oyewale, EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, four officers visited the radio station to invite Favour Ekoh, host of Prime Time, for questioning regarding an alleged N700 million ponzi scam involving about 50 victims [1).
Alleged Ponzi Scheme
The victims claim Ekoh lured them into investing in “Life Trading” through Leverage Index Limited, promising 10% returns on investment. However, the company allegedly closed its office without returning investments or principal amounts to victims.
Arrest and Investigation
Upon arrival, EFCC officers identified themselves and explained their mission to the station’s general manager, Bamikole Omoyomi. However, they were held hostage when the gate was locked. A rescue team was called, leading to the arrest of Ekoh, Omoyomi, and two security guards. The EFCC emphasizes that Ekoh was not arrested on-air and lawful station activities were not disrupted.
EFCC’s Position
The commission stresses its commitment to media cooperation but condemns unlawful obstruction of its duties. The EFCC calls on the International Press Institute and Nigerian Union of Journalists to investigate the station’s conduct.
