Nigerian Governors Express Support for EFCC’s Anti-Corruption Efforts
The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) has pledged its support for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in its fight against corruption. This commitment was made by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq at the 2024 National Cybercrime Summit in Abuja.
The summit, organized by the EFCC in collaboration with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RoLAC) and the European Union, focused on enhancing digital skills to combat cybercrime. Abdulrazaq emphasized the need for synergy on cybersecurity to promote national development and a shift in public perception of crimes [1).
Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal also expressed his readiness to support the EFCC’s anti-corruption efforts, stating that elected leaders should be accountable and transparent.
This development comes as Nigeria struggles with the impact of cybercrime, having lost over $500 million to it in 2022, according to EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede ¹ ². The EFCC has recorded 3,455 convictions in the past year, with cybercrime accounting for a significant percentage.
The NGF’s support is a significant boost to the EFCC’s efforts, particularly as the Supreme Court reserves judgment on a suit challenging the commission’s constitutionality.
