The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has sparked controversy with his recent statement that individuals claiming to receive credit alerts through prayer should be investigated for potential theft.

Obi emphasized the importance of hard work and productivity, stating that God cannot bless someone who is idle. “God can bless hard work; God can bless productivity; God can bless an industry, but God cannot bless someone who is sleeping,” he said in an interview on the Honest Bunch podcast.

He also suggested that charitable works, such as helping the poor or visiting hospitals, are forms of tithing. “If you go to the hospital, it’s tithing. If you help poor people, it’s tithing,” Obi explained.

Additionally, Obi urged political leaders to prioritize serving the people over personal financial gain. “Being a leader is not a money-making venture. You’re not competing with Dangote. Dangote is a businessman. You should focus on what you were elected for,” he said.

Obi’s comments have generated mixed reactions among Nigerians, particularly after his suggestion to convert church vigils into night shifts to enhance productivity.

This development comes amid ongoing debates about the role of faith and productivity in Nigerian society.
